Uralchem Group hands over 55,000 tonnes of humanitarian fertiliser to Sri Lanka
Uralchem Group has transferred a humanitarian consignment of 55,000 tonnes of potash to Sri Lanka at an official ceremony held on 12 December 2024 in the country’s capital city, Colombo.
Among notable participants of the event were Sri Lanka’s Minister of Agriculture Mr. Kuragamage Don Lalkantha, the Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Mr. Levan Dzhagaryan, and representatives of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and of Uralchem Group.
The long-awaited shipment of this vital fertiliser, which was sent from the EU by sea in mid-October, has finally reached the Port of Colombo and is currently being offloaded.
This consignment is Uralchem Group’s sixth donation in a series of humanitarian fertiliser deliveries to countries facing the risk of food shortages and aims to alleviate the effects of an unprecedented global food crisis.
Since late 2022, Uralchem Group has dispatched, free of charge, around 190,000 tonnes of its fertilisers to developing nations, covering the sea freight and other delivery costs. The transportation of more than 166,000 tonnes of these fertilisers from European ports — to Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and now Sri Lanka — has been facilitated by WFP.
The humanitarian initiative also supports efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goal #2 — “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”.
Dmitry Konyaev, CEO of Uralchem JSC:
Mineral fertilisers play a crucial role in ensuring healthy plant growth, supporting higher yields and thus safeguarding stable food supply. Being a major global producer and exporter of mineral fertilisers and a company committed to the principle that everyone should have access to food, we’re pleased to support Sri Lanka's agriculture sector and contribute to the well-being of its people. We look forward to seeing the local farmers apply the donated fertiliser and reap fruitful harvests.
