Information for farmers
Corn mineral nutrition:
- Corn is very sensitive to soils. Clay soils and water-logged soils are not suitable for it.
- Corn is very sensitive to nutrition elements during the first month of growth and development.
- The period of maximum nitrogen consumption (65%) lasts from paniculation to flowering. This is also the period when more then half of all the nutrition elements are consumed.
- Corn is sensitive to acid soils, the best level is 5,7?7,3 рН, it is therefore recommended to apply calcium-ammonium nitrate to acid soils.
- Corn gives positive reaction to organic fertilizers and it is recommended to apply 80-100 t/ha of them in fall before plowing.
Best time to apply mineral fertilizers:
- On loam soils it is recommended to apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in fall, on sandy soils – in spring on presowing cultivation.
- It is crucial to apply 10-15 kg/ha (in major nutrient equivalent) of phosphorus into rows at sowing.
- About 70% of the full volume of nitrogen is applied during presowing cultivation in spring.
- Corn also requires about 50-65 kg/ha of sulphur.
- For additional nutrition ammonium nitrate and its sulphur containing forms give the best result.
- Zinc is recommended as microfertilizer for corn and is to be applied at the volume of 50-100 g/ha at the stage of 3-4 leaves. iron and manganese are also recommended.
