The Company’s projects for use of natural resources and environmental protection

Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

The Kyoto Protocol has become one of the global agreements in the field of environmental protection, and Russia has signed up to it. By ratifying the agreement, Russia became a participant in the global reductions market, the volume of which (In USD equivalent) amounts to tens of billions of US dollars. Whole countries as well as separate commercial structures take part to some extent in implementation  of the protocol.

Mechanisms of the parties’ cooperation set by the Kyoto Protocol predetermine certain obligations on reduction of detrimental anthropogenic effect on the environment as well as the possibility for parties to receive investments from implementation of projects for the reduction and sale of reduced emissions units.

In 2007 the Company took part in Joint Implementation Project (JIP) under article 6 of the Kyoto Protocol, which implies the step-by-step reduction and utilization of nitrogen monoxide. By now, the Company has signed agreements for joint implementation of some projects with Marubeni. The work on the projects is expected to last up to the year  2012.

Development and incorporation of highly effective purification technologies

The Company’s environmental  specialists permanently work to incorporate highly effective environmental protection technologies for maximum reduction of the amount and concentration of pollutants and sewage water dumped in the production process.

The technologies that we have today include unique systems of biological and instrumental level-based water purification with recycling. The products incorporated in the production process for purification of water are the result of prolonged scientific study and the experience of both the Company’s environment specialists and the recognized world leaders in this field.

Development and incorporation of technologies for waste utilization and use

According to the program for environmental protection, harmonious exploitation of natural resources, and work on industrial waste being adopted by the Company, URALCHEM is currently carrying out activities aimed at developing the possibility of secondary use of waste in the production process or the maximum separation of useful elements with their consequent sale.

For these purposes the Company has created a special department and has started to work with possible future consumers. In the near future, the Company is planning to open an e-site from which any interested party will be able to purchase components made from the company’s industrial waste.

In addition, URALCHEM's specialists are continuously working on new ideas directed at recycling and reprocessing waste storages left behind from the USSR period.

Development and incorporation of technologies to increase energy efficiecy

Considering the negative situation created by the global warming  as well as the constantly increasing cost of fuels (energy resources) and, as a consequence, the inevitable increase in production cost, the Company is developing a program for harmonious exploitation of energy resources and increase in energy efficiency.

Thus, in the near future, the Company is planning to audit energy efficiency with the aim to review fuel (energy resources) consumption levels and develop measures to cut the consumption, increase the output, and, as a result, receive the best possible economic and environmental effect. In addition, the Company is planning to incorporate an energy resources management system which would enable constant real-time monitoring and management of the fuel (energy resources) consumption.

Certification of the produced materials according to the REACH system

The Order of the European Parliament and the European Union Board (hereinafter -  EU) No. 1907/2006 dated 18 December, 2006 governing the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of the use of chemical materials (REACH – Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) took effect on 1 June, 2007. In accordance with the Order all chemical materials – individual chemicals as well as elements of mixtures and products – which are produced, imported and used in the territory of the EU are subject to obligatory registration with the European Chemical Agency.

Considering the sustainable export relationships between URALCHEM and companies situated in the territory of the EU member countries and understanding the importance of environmental safety as well as the safety of citizens’ life and health the Company is currently taking all possible steps to ensure that supplied production complies with the REACH legislative requirements.

Uralchem was one of the first companies in Russia to pre-register - through its only representative – Uralchem Assist GmbH – the products that are exported to EU countries. By now the company has concluded the required contracts to join all consortiums related to pre-registered chemicals (FARM, IP, Calcium, etc.). We are now working to prepare registration files. Management company employees regularly conduct trainings and seminars with representatives from our plants and inform them of the latest changes in the European Law. We hold comprehensive studies of the exported products, their toxicological and eco-toxicological characteristics.

We also work to comply with the requirements of the new European regulations on classification, package and marking of the production, prepare new safety data sheets that will fully comply with Russian and international law.

Improvement of mechanisms for normative regulation of environment protection and natural resources use

The Company contributes a lot to improving the mechanisms for normative regulation of environmental protection and use of natural resources. The Company’s employees, being members of various working groups constantly prepare and put forward constructive proposals and in this way form the Company’s position with regard to legal initiatives and proposals, both on the level of the federation’s constituent territories and at a federal level.
